He was a defender by position but he transformed what that position could mean, moving forward from the back to influence matches as an attacker in a way that no defender of his era attempted. He was voted the \u003ca href=\"\/de\/collections\/ballon-dor-clothing\"\u003eBallon\u003c\/a\u003e d'Or in 1972 and 1976. He captained West Germany to the World Cup in 1974 on home soil and captained them to the final in 1966, where they lost to \u003ca href=\"\/de\/collections\/england-football\"\u003eEngland\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a manager he surpassed what he had achieved as a player. He took West Germany to the 1986 World Cup Final and then guided a reunified Germany to the World Cup in 1990 in \u003ca href=\"\/de\/collections\/ac-milan\"\u003eItaly\u003c\/a\u003e, beating \u003ca href=\"\/de\/collections\/argentina\"\u003eArgentina\u003c\/a\u003e 1-0 in the final in Rome. He is the only individual to have lifted the World Cup both as a captain and as a manager. He returned to Bayern as president and continued to shape German football at the highest level until his passing in January 2024 at the age of 78. His legacy is inseparable from the story of German football.
