Who Is Hjalmar Ekdal?
Hjalmar Ekdal is a Swedish centre-back currently plying his trade with Burnley. He joined the club in January 2023 on a long-term deal. He also spent part of 2025 on loan at FC Groningen, where he gained valuable playing time and experience.
Before arriving in England, Ekdal made his mark in Swedish football. He emerged from the youth ranks at IF Brommapojkarna in Stockholm, then took the bold step of heading to the U.S. to play college soccer at UNC Wilmington. After returning to Sweden, he played for IK Frej, had a brief loan to Assyriska FF, and later joined Hammarby IF. He was loaned to IK Sirius to gain top-flight experience, and that led to his breakthrough spell at Djurgårdens IF. At Djurgården he cemented himself as a force in defence, earning recognition for his performances in the Allsvenskan, including the Defender of the Year accolade.
On the international stage, Ekdal has represented Sweden. He appeared for the U19s and U21s before making his senior debut in June 2022 in a UEFA Nations League fixture. Since then, he has added multiple caps for his country, defending the Swedish colours with pride.
