Norbert “Nobby” Stiles remains one of English football’s most admired figures. Known for his relentless determination, fearless tackles and unforgettable celebrations, Stiles carved out a career that left a permanent mark on football history.
He spent the majority of his club career at Manchester United (1959–1971), where he played a crucial role in the club’s success during the 1960s. Stiles helped United secure the 1965 and 1967 First Division titles, and was integral to the legendary 1968 European Cup victory, becoming part of the first English side ever to win the competition.
Following his time at Old Trafford, Stiles went on to represent Middlesbrough (1971–1973) and later Preston North End (1973–1975), continuing to showcase his tenacious style of play before retiring.
On the international stage, Stiles earned hero status as part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning squad, famously marking Eusebio out of the semi-final and cementing himself as a national treasure. His distinctive toothless grin during the post-final celebrations remains one of the most iconic images in English football history.
