The 2004 Champions League Finalists

Monaco's run to the 2003-04 Champions League final under Didier Deschamps is one of European football's great underdog achievements of the modern era. Defeating a Real Madrid side containing Zidane, Ronaldo, Beckham and Raul in the quarter-finals with a team built on relative unknowns was simply extraordinary. Dado Prso's hat-trick in that quarter-final at the Stade Louis II remains one of the most celebrated individual performances in the competition's history. Fernando Morientes, on loan from the very Real Madrid they had just eliminated, finished as the tournament's top scorer. The final defeat to Porto was painful, but the run itself was magnificent and gave the club a permanent place in the competition's folklore.

The late 1980s Monaco side under Arsene Wenger, before his legendary tenure at Arsenal, featured Glenn Hoddle, who ended his playing career in the principality with great distinction, Mark Hateley up front, and the young George Weah in his formative years before he became the greatest African player of his generation at PSG and AC Milan. Wenger's Monaco won the Ligue 1 title in 1988.

The 2017 Generation and the Golden Squad

The 2016-17 Monaco side under Leonardo Jardim is the most celebrated in the club's recent history. With a budget a fraction of their Champions League rivals, they assembled a team that won Ligue 1 and reached the semi-finals playing some of the most breathtaking attacking football seen in Europe that entire season. Kylian Mbappe, then just 18 years old, announced himself to the world with pace and finishing already operating at a level beyond his age. His subsequent transfer to PSG was inevitable and enormous. Bernardo Silva moved to Manchester City, where he has since become one of the finest players of the Premier League era. Fabinho became one of the world's finest defensive midfielders at Liverpool. Thomas Lemar, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Benjamin Mendy all moved to English clubs the following summer.
