Frank Bruno turns 65 on 16 November, and the nation's affection for him has never faded. In December 2025 he was granted the Freedom of the City of London, an honour he said "means more to me than my MBE". Three decades after that unforgettable night at Wembley, big Frank is still one of British sport's best-loved figures.
This is the story of the Hammersmith heavyweight who finally became world champion at the fourth attempt. Browse our boxing collection for more ring legends.

Early Years: Youngest ABA Champion
Born in Hammersmith in west London, Bruno showed his power early. In 1980, aged just 18, he became the youngest ever ABA heavyweight champion, and he lost only once in 21 amateur bouts. He turned professional and rattled through opponents, building a huge following with his knockout punch and his warm, self-deprecating charm.

The Breakthrough: European Champion
His first loss came against James "Bonecrusher" Smith in 1984, but Bruno rebuilt. On 1 October 1985 he knocked out Anders Eklund in the fourth round to become European heavyweight champion, and in March 1986 he flattened former world champion Gerrie Coetzee in the opening round. Pull on our Frank Bruno Boxing Icon Frame Men's T-Shirt and relive those early knockouts.

World Title Heartbreaks
Three times Bruno fought for a world title, and three times he came up short. Tim Witherspoon stopped him in the 11th round in 1986. In February 1989 he famously rocked Mike Tyson in the first round in Las Vegas before being stopped in the fifth. In October 1993, in an all-British clash in Cardiff, WBC champion Lennox Lewis stopped him in the seventh round. Each time, the British public loved him more.

Wembley 1995: Champion at Last
On 2 September 1995, at Wembley Stadium, Bruno finally did it, outpointing Oliver McCall on scores of 117–111, 117–111 and 115–113 to become WBC heavyweight champion. The roar that night is still talked about. He lost the belt to Tyson in March 1996 and retired that year, but nobody could take that night away.
