The story behind the name
Born in Catford, south London, Gomez came through the Charlton Athletic academy and was handed a first-team debut as a teenager. Liverpool signed him in 2015, and through injuries and fierce competition for places he became one of the most versatile defenders of his generation, comfortable at centre-back or full-back. He was part of the Liverpool squads that won the Champions League and the Premier League, and he has represented England at senior level.
