Paul Gascoigne was born in Gateshead in 1967 and came through the youth system at Newcastle United, making his debut in 1985. His ability was immediately obvious - a midfielder with extraordinary close control, strength on the ball, the ability to unlock defences with a pass no one else had conceived of and a presence on a football pitch that made everything seem possible when he was involved. Tottenham signed him in 1988 and he produced the performances that led to Lazio paying £5.5 million for him in 1992, at the time a British record fee for a British player.
At Italia 90 he was the story of England's tournament. Quick, inventive, brilliant at every turn and playing with a freedom and a joy that made watching England an experience unlike anything the country had seen in a generation. His booking in the semi-final against West Germany meant he would have missed the final had England reached it. The realisation hit him on the pitch and the tears that followed - in the seconds after the yellow card was shown - became one of the defining images of English sport. England lost on penalties. Gazza cried. The country cried with him.
