Higuita was born in Medellin, Colombia, in 1966 and spent most of his career at Atletico Nacional, where he was part of the team that won the Copa Libertadores in 1989. He represented Colombia at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, a tournament where he became known as much for his sweeper-keeper style as for anything else. In the round of 16 against Cameroon, with Colombia winning 1-0 in extra time, Higuita attempted to dribble past Roger Milla outside his own area. Milla dispossessed him and scored. Cameroon won 2-1. It remains one of the most talked-about goalkeeper errors in World Cup history, and one of the most instructive examples of the risk that came with Higuita's style.
The scorpion kick save came in a friendly at Wembley in 1995. Jamie Redknapp's low cross was heading towards goal. Higuita caught the ball between his heels by diving forward and flicking his legs up behind him in one extraordinary movement. It is the most spectacular save in the history of goalkeeping and it made him a global name in a moment. His style, his theatrics and his refusal to be a conventional goalkeeper made him one of the most beloved and most discussed players in the history of Colombian football.
