Early Years
Born in Chicago, Ford began with small film and TV parts in the 1960s. To support his family he became a self-taught carpenter, building for clients in Los Angeles while waiting for his break.

Breakthrough as Han Solo
George Lucas cast him in American Graffiti (1973) and then as Han Solo in Star Wars (1977). In 1981 he became Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Blade Runner (1982) followed.

Peak Years and a Late Renaissance
Witness (1985) earned his only Oscar nomination, and the 1990s brought The Fugitive, the Jack Ryan films and Air Force One. He returned as Han Solo in 2015, played Deckard again in Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and said goodbye to Indy in 2023. Recent work includes the drama 1923 and Shrinking.
Shrinking and a Busy 2020s
Since 2023 Ford has played therapist Dr Paul Rhoades in the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking, earning his first ever Emmy nomination in 2025 and a second in 2026. Season 3 premiered on 28 January 2026 with 11 episodes, and Apple renewed the show for a fourth season. He also starred as Jacob Dutton opposite Helen Mirren in the Yellowstone prequel 1923, and in February 2025 he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as President Thaddeus Ross, taking over the role from the late William Hurt. In March 2026 he received the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award, adding to a long list of career honours that already included the AFI Life Achievement Award and an honorary Palme d'Or.
