Babbel worked back to professional fitness and eventually returned to first-team football. A loan at Blackburn Rovers gave him regular Premier League matches, and he later joined Stuttgart. The recovery did not recreate the exact Liverpool momentum, but reaching the elite game again was a substantial achievement.
Stuttgart and management
Babbel finished his playing career at Stuttgart and was part of the squad that won the Bundesliga in 2006/07. He moved into coaching and management, taking charge of Stuttgart, Hertha Berlin, Hoffenheim, Luzern and Western Sydney Wanderers at different stages.
That second career placed the defensive judgement and dressing-room experience of his playing days into a new context. It also kept him connected with German, Swiss and Australian football rather than leaving his public identity fixed at Anfield.
