Siya Kolisi's journey from Zwide township to Springbok captain is one of modern sport's most significant leadership stories. A scholarship took him to Grey High School, he developed with Western Province and the Stormers and made his South Africa debut in 2013. In 2018 he became the first Black player appointed as Springbok Test captain, carrying a responsibility shaped by the country's history while continuing to perform the demanding work of a Test flanker.
Kolisi led South Africa to the 2019 World Cup, defeating England 32-12 in the final, and lifted the trophy in Yokohama 24 years after François Pienaar's 1995 side. He captained the 2021 Lions series win and recovered from serious knee injury to lead the Springboks at the 2023 World Cup. One-point knockout victories over France, England and New Zealand delivered a record fourth title, making Kolisi only the second man after Richie McCaw to captain consecutive World Cup-winning teams. He reached 100 Springbok caps in 2025.
