Matthews became a foundation of the franchise, playing in Houston from 1983 through 1996 before remaining with the team during its move to Tennessee.
He appeared for the Tennessee Oilers in 1997 and 1998, then completed his career with the Tennessee Titans from 1999 through 2001. Although the city and team name changed, Matthews never changed franchises. That uninterrupted service gave him a unique connection to supporters in both Houston and Tennessee and made him a living bridge between the Oilers era and the Titans era.
His ability to play across the offensive line remains one of the defining features of his career. Matthews started 99 games at left guard, 87 at centre, 67 at right guard, 22 at right tackle and 17 at left tackle. He also served as a long snapper. Many linemen spend an entire career mastering one specialised position; Matthews could move between all five positions while continuing to perform among the best players in the league.
Playing guard required him to generate movement in the running game and protect the interior against powerful defensive tackles. At centre, he also had to snap the ball, read defensive formations and communicate blocking adjustments. At tackle, he faced quicker edge rushers and protected the quarterback from outside pressure. His success in each role demonstrated exceptional technique, intelligence and preparation.
Matthews’ record for availability was just as remarkable as his versatility. He played 296 regular-season games, starting 293, and started each of his 15 postseason appearances. Across 19 punishing seasons, he never missed a game because of injury. His run of 229 consecutive starts reflected a rare combination of physical resilience and determination. When he retired, he had played more games than any non-kicking specialist in league history.
Recognition followed year after year. Matthews made 14 consecutive Pro Bowls from 1988 to 2001, earning nine selections as a guard and five as a centre. He received seven Associated Press First-Team All-Pro honours, with major selectors recognising him as a first-team All-Pro nine times in total. He was also named Offensive Lineman of the Year on three occasions, confirming the respect he commanded across different stages of his career.
Matthews helped the franchise win 146 games and reach the postseason nine times during his career. The Oilers won three AFC Central division championships, while the line supported several different offensive styles and generations of players. Matthews blocked for quarterbacks including Warren Moon and Steve McNair, as well as productive running backs such as Mike Rozier, Lorenzo White, Gary Brown and Eddie George.
His work with Moon placed him at the centre of Houston’s celebrated attacking teams. As the offence evolved, Matthews remained its constant, adapting to new quarterbacks, runners, coaches and tactical systems. Later, his blocking contributed to four consecutive Pro Bowl seasons for Eddie George and helped provide the protection required for Steve McNair to develop into one of the league’s most influential quarterbacks.
The long-awaited opportunity to compete for a championship arrived during the 1999 season. Now playing under the Titans name, the franchise finished 13–3 and progressed through the playoffs by defeating Buffalo, Indianapolis and Jacksonville. The AFC Championship victory over the Jaguars sent Matthews and his teammates to Super Bowl XXXIV against the St. Louis Rams.
The Titans recovered from a 16-point deficit to level the Super Bowl during the fourth quarter, only for the Rams to regain the lead. Tennessee’s final drive reached the St. Louis ten-yard line, but the potential tying touchdown was stopped just short as time expired. The 23–16 defeat was painful, yet the campaign remains the franchise’s only Super Bowl appearance and gave Matthews an AFC Championship after 17 seasons of service.
His career was later honoured through selection to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team and the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. The franchise retired his number 74 and inducted him into its Ring of Honor. In 2007, Matthews was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame at the first opportunity, placing him permanently among the greatest players at any position.
Matthews did not have a separate senior international career, as his era of American Football did not offer a comparable national-team tournament structure. His achievements were built through USC and the NFL, where his longevity, positional flexibility and sustained excellence created a record few players have approached.
