Calvin Johnson arrived in the NFL from Georgia Tech as the second selection in the 2007 draft and spent his entire professional career with the Detroit Lions. At six feet five with exceptional speed and reach, he could win contested catches, stretch a defence vertically and turn short passes into major gains. The nickname Megatron captured the unusual combination of size and athleticism.

In 2012 Johnson set the NFL single-season receiving yardage record with 1,964 yards, passing Jerry Rice's previous mark. He earned six consecutive Pro Bowl selections, was chosen three times as a first-team All-Pro and finished with 11,619 receiving yards despite retiring after only nine seasons. The Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 2021, recognising a career whose impact was much larger than its length.
