After injuries disrupted his 2020 and 2021 seasons, McCaffrey began 2022 with Carolina before being traded to San Francisco. The move placed him within Kyle Shanahan’s adaptable offence and returned him to the region where he had produced his greatest college achievements.

McCaffrey produced 160 yards from scrimmage against Kansas City in the Super Bowl, divided evenly between 80 rushing and 80 receiving yards. His eight catches included a touchdown reception, and he became the first player to record at least 75 rushing and 75 receiving yards in a Super Bowl. San Francisco eventually lost 25–22 in overtime after an exceptionally close championship contest.
McCaffrey was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year for the 2023 season and received First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition. His importance to the 49ers was reflected not only in the statistics but in the range of options his presence created for teammates such as Brock Purdy, George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.
Injury limited McCaffrey to four appearances in 2024, with Achilles problems delaying his season before a knee injury ended it. He returned in 2025 to start all 17 games, carrying 311 times for 1,202 yards and ten touchdowns. As a receiver, he produced 102 catches, 924 yards and seven touchdowns.
His 2,126 yards from scrimmage represented one of the strongest all-purpose totals of the season, while his 413 touches led the league. That return earned McCaffrey NFL Comeback Player of the Year, another Pro Bowl selection and First-Team All-Pro recognition. He completed the season with career totals of 7,589 rushing yards, 5,390 receiving yards and 98 combined rushing and receiving touchdowns.
McCaffrey was also selected to receive the 2026 Bart Starr Award, recognising character, leadership and positive conduct. There is no separate senior international tournament record associated with his career because his achievements have been earned through American college football and the NFL.
