Atlanta selected him fifth overall in the 1989 NFL Draft. He became a star cornerback, kick returner and punt returner while continuing to pursue professional baseball.
After five seasons in Atlanta, Sanders joined San Francisco for the 1994 campaign. He intercepted six passes and returned them for an extraordinary 303 yards, scoring three touchdowns. His average of more than 50 yards per interception return demonstrated how quickly he could transform a defensive play into an attacking opportunity.
Sanders was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year and helped San Francisco defeat San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX. The championship completed a remarkable individual season and made him the leading defensive player available when he entered the market again.
Dallas added Sanders during the 1995 season, strengthening an already talented roster. The Cowboys had won championships following the 1992 and 1993 seasons but had lost to San Francisco in the next NFC Championship Game. Adding the player who had helped defeat them gave Dallas a proven winner and an elite answer to opposing wide receivers.
Sanders made his Cowboys debut after recovering from surgery and helped the team finish 12–4. Dallas defeated Philadelphia in the Divisional Round and Green Bay in the NFC Championship Game before meeting Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX.
His championship-game contribution reflected his versatility. Sanders covered receivers on defence, returned a punt and caught a 47-yard pass from Troy Aikman. That reception helped establish the opening Dallas touchdown as the Cowboys went on to win 27–17. Sanders had secured consecutive Super Bowl victories with two different teams.
During the 1996 season, Dallas expanded his offensive role. Sanders caught 36 passes for 475 yards and a touchdown while continuing to start at cornerback. He became one of the first regular two-way starters in the modern NFL, taking on the physical and mental demands of learning responsibilities on offence, defence and special teams.
His Cowboys career lasted five seasons and included four Pro Bowl selections. Sanders received First-Team All-Pro recognition in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Although opponents increasingly avoided testing him through the air, his presence still shaped games by reducing the available space for opposing quarterbacks.
Sanders could also provide an immediate score whenever a team was forced to punt. He led the league with a 15.6-yard punt-return average in 1998. Against the New York Giants that season, he returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown and later carried an interception 71 yards for another score.
After leaving Dallas in 2000, Sanders spent a season in Washington and then stepped away from the game. He returned with Baltimore in 2004 and played two further seasons before completing his NFL career.
Across 188 regular-season games, Sanders intercepted 53 passes and returned them for 1,331 yards. Nine of those interceptions became touchdowns. He also scored six times on punt returns, three times on kick-off returns, three times as a receiver and once following a fumble recovery, giving him 22 career touchdowns.
Sanders earned eight Pro Bowl selections, six First-Team All-Pro honours and the 1994 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. His inclusion in the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team at both cornerback and punt returner recognised the range of his influence. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
His professional baseball career made his sporting achievements even more unusual. Sanders appeared in 641 Major League Baseball games, playing for the New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants. He used his speed to record 186 stolen bases and reached the 1992 World Series with Atlanta.
No other player has competed in both a Super Bowl and a World Series. Sanders performed strongly in the 1992 World Series, producing eight hits from 15 at-bats and stealing five bases. He also played an NFL game and reported for a baseball postseason fixture on the same day, creating one of the most remarkable two-sport stories in American sporting history.
Following his playing career, Sanders moved into coaching. He led Jackson State to consecutive conference titles and helped increase attention around historically Black colleges and universities. He subsequently became head coach at Colorado, where his Prime Time identity evolved into Coach Prime and introduced his approach to another generation of players.
Sanders’ career did not include a separate senior international tournament record, as his achievements came within American Football and Major League Baseball. Reaching the championship game in two major professional sports nevertheless gives his career an international level of recognition that few athletes can match.
