The impact was immediate. New Orleans won the NFC South and reached the NFC Championship Game during Brees’ first season. He passed for a league-leading 4,418 yards and received First-Team All-Pro recognition, beginning a period in which the Saints became one of football’s most productive attacking teams.
Brees also developed a meaningful relationship with the city. His community work supported recovery projects, schools, healthcare initiatives and families affected by the hurricane. That commitment contributed to his selection as a joint recipient of the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
In 2008, he passed for 5,069 yards and 34 touchdowns, becoming only the second quarterback to record a 5,000-yard season at that time. He was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year, but the Saints remained determined to convert their attacking success into a championship.
New Orleans opened the 2009 season with 13 consecutive victories. Brees led the league in touchdown passes and established a new completion-percentage record by completing more than 70 per cent of his attempts. The Saints finished first in the NFC and defeated Arizona 45–14 in their opening playoff game.
The NFC Championship Game against Minnesota became one of the most dramatic fixtures in franchise history. Brees threw three touchdown passes as New Orleans won 31–28 in overtime. The victory sent the Saints to the Super Bowl for the first time.
Super Bowl XLIV began with Indianapolis taking a ten-point lead, but Brees and the Saints responded. He completed 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. New Orleans took control in the second half and secured the championship when Tracy Porter returned an interception for a touchdown.
The 31–17 victory delivered the first Super Bowl title in Saints history. Brees was named the game’s Most Valuable Player after completing 82.1 per cent of his passes. For New Orleans supporters, the triumph represented sporting success and a powerful symbol of the city’s recovery.
Brees continued to produce historic numbers after becoming a champion. In 2011, he completed 468 passes for 5,476 yards and 46 touchdowns. He broke the existing single-season passing-yardage record, established a completion rate above 71 per cent and led the Saints to another division championship.
That campaign brought his second NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. New Orleans scored more than 40 points in both of its final regular-season games and defeated Detroit in the playoffs before losing a dramatic Divisional Round fixture against San Francisco.
Brees recorded five career seasons with at least 5,000 passing yards, a total no other quarterback has matched. He threw a touchdown pass in 54 consecutive games, surpassing Johnny Unitas’ long-standing league record. He also tied the single-game record with seven touchdown passes during a 52–49 victory over the New York Giants in 2015.
From 2017 through 2020, the Saints won four consecutive NFC South championships. The 2018 side finished 13–3 and reached the NFC Championship Game, with Brees continuing to produce some of the most accurate passing seasons ever recorded. He completed 74.4 per cent of his attempts in 2018 and threw 32 touchdowns against only five interceptions.
Brees retired after the 2020 season, completing a 20-year NFL career that included five seasons in San Diego and 15 in New Orleans. He finished with 7,142 completions, 80,358 passing yards, 571 touchdowns and a 67.7 per cent completion rate across 287 regular-season games.
His honours include 13 Pro Bowl selections, First-Team All-Pro recognition and four Second-Team selections. He was twice named NFL Offensive Player of the Year and also received Comeback Player of the Year, Walter Payton Man of the Year and the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.
Brees was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame at the first opportunity as a member of its 2026 class. His selection completed the journey from an undersized second-round prospect recovering from a serious shoulder injury to a Super Bowl-winning quarterback and one of the most productive passers in league history.
His career did not include a separate senior international tournament record because his achievements were earned through the American college and professional systems.
