Duncan Ferguson scored on his Everton debut, won the hearts of Goodison Park within weeks of his arrival and spent the better part of twelve years with the club across two spells — becoming one of the most beloved players in the club's modern history despite, or perhaps because of, the injuries that prevented him from ever playing the sustained run of matches that his ability deserved. His aerial dominance, his physical presence and his ability to lead the line against the best defenders in the Premier League made him a folk hero at Goodison Park.

Ferguson's most famous contribution was his goals against Manchester United in 1995, when he headed two in a 2-0 Everton win that remains one of the most celebrated performances at Goodison in the modern era. His relationship with the club's supporters was built on exactly that kind of moment — a centre-forward who put his head where the boots were flying and refused to be dominated by any opponent. Big Dunc is remembered not for the volume of his goals but for the manner in which he played, and the impression that left on every Evertonian who watched him.
