His goalscoring form earned him a move to Everton, where he enjoyed a prolific season and was named both PFA Players’ Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year.

After starring for England at the 1986 World Cup, Lineker moved to Barcelona, playing at the Camp Nou and winning the Copa del Rey and European Cup Winners’ Cup. He later returned to English football with Tottenham Hotspur, where he continued his reputation as one of the country’s finest finishers and helped Spurs win the FA Cup. He finished his playing career in Japan with Nagoya Grampus Eight.

For England, Lineker scored 48 goals in 80 appearances, making him one of the nation’s all-time great forwards. His World Cup record is legendary. At Mexico 1986, he won the Golden Boot with six goals, including a famous hat-trick against Poland and goals against Paraguay and Argentina. At Italia 90, he scored four more as England reached the semi-finals, taking his total to 10 World Cup goals, more than any other England player. For many fans, Lineker represents the golden age of tournament football, sticker albums, bold kits, summer memories and unforgettable England moments.
