John Elway was born in Washington state in 1960 and grew up around football as the son of coach Jack Elway. His natural athletic ability extended beyond the quarterback position. He became an outstanding baseball player as well as one of the country’s most highly regarded young football talents.
At Stanford, Elway developed into a quarterback capable of making almost any throw. Between 1979 and 1982, he passed for more than 9,000 yards and 77 touchdowns. His senior season brought consensus All-American recognition and a second-place finish in the Heisman Trophy voting.
