From an Unwanted Draft Pick to a Football Icon
Johnny Unitas followed one of the most unlikely routes to greatness in professional sport. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1933, he played college football at the University of Louisville. Although his talent and determination were evident, he did not receive the level of national attention enjoyed by quarterbacks from the era’s most powerful college programmes.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Unitas in the ninth round of the 1955 draft, but he was released before the season began. With no professional team, he found construction work and played semi-professional football for the Bloomfield Rams. He competed on rough local fields for a small payment while continuing to believe that he could succeed at a much higher level.
Baltimore offered Unitas an opportunity in 1956. He earned a place with the Colts and soon took over at quarterback, beginning a remarkable 17-season association with the franchise. His high-top boots, black haircut and distinctive throwing motion became instantly recognisable, but it was his command of the game that made him a hero to supporters.
Unitas helped redefine the position. He was comfortable calling plays, reading defences and changing decisions at the line of scrimmage. He attacked downfield with confidence and developed an exceptional understanding with receivers including Raymond Berry. His ability to control a two-minute offence established a model followed by generations of quarterbacks.
The Greatest Game Ever Played
The defining early moment of Unitas’s career came in the 1958 NFL Championship Game against the New York Giants. Played at Yankee Stadium, the contest became the first championship game in league history to be decided in sudden-death overtime and is frequently remembered as “The Greatest Game Ever Played”.
With Baltimore trailing late in regulation, Unitas calmly moved the Colts into position for the tying field goal. His completions to Raymond Berry demonstrated the precision and composure that would become central to his reputation. In overtime, Unitas directed another decisive drive before Alan Ameche scored the winning touchdown, giving Baltimore a 23–17 victory.
The excitement of the nationally televised game helped introduce professional football to a much larger audience. Unitas was at the centre of that transformation. His late-game leadership made the quarterback position feel dramatic, intelligent and essential, while the contest helped accelerate the sport’s growth across the United States.
Baltimore returned to the championship game the following season and once again faced the Giants. The Colts won 31–16, giving Unitas and his teammates consecutive league titles. He was named the league’s Most Valuable Player for the 1959 season after leading the competition in passing yards and touchdown passes.
A Touchdown Record That Lasted for Generations
Between 1956 and 1960, Unitas threw at least one touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games. At a time when offences were less focused on passing and quarterbacks received limited protection, the streak represented extraordinary consistency. It remained the professional record for more than half a century before it was eventually surpassed by Drew Brees.
Unitas led the league in touchdown passes in four consecutive seasons from 1957 through 1960. His combination of preparation, courage and attacking ambition helped modernise offensive football. Rather than treating passing as an occasional alternative to the running game, he demonstrated that a quarterback could control matches through sustained, intelligent work through the air.
His individual honours extended across several eras. Unitas received three league MVP awards and was selected for 10 Pro Bowls, a Colts record. He earned First-Team All-Pro recognition five times and led the league in passing yards on four occasions. He was also chosen for the league’s 1960s All-Decade Team.
Unitas remained part of another championship team during the 1970 season. The Colts defeated Dallas 16–13 in Super Bowl V, with a late field goal securing the victory. Unitas started the game and contributed a touchdown pass before leaving through injury. The result made him the only Colts player to be part of the franchise’s championship teams from 1958, 1959 and 1970.
After 17 seasons with the Colts, Unitas played his final campaign with San Diego in 1973. He retired as the game’s career leader in passing attempts, completions, passing yards and touchdown passes. His final totals included 40,239 passing yards, 2,830 completions and 290 touchdown passes.
Those figures were accumulated during an era of shorter schedules, physical defensive play and rules that provided far less protection for quarterbacks and receivers. His achievements cannot be measured by modern statistics alone. Unitas’s greater contribution was showing what the quarterback position could become.
Unitas was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979. His number 19 was retired by the Colts, and he was selected for the league’s 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time Teams. He died in 2002, but his influence remains visible in every quarterback trusted to organise an offence, call plays under pressure and lead a late winning drive.
American football does not provide a regular senior international tournament system comparable with sports organised around national teams. Unitas therefore has no separate World Cup-style career record. His accomplishments still became known internationally, and he remains a favourite hero among Colts fans and football fanatics throughout the UK and around the world.
