At club level, Chilavert built his legendary status across South America and Europe. He began his professional career at Sportivo Luqueño, before moving to San Lorenzo in Argentina. Later spells with Strasbourg in France and Peñarol in Uruguay added to a career defined by personality and success, before returning once more to Vélez Sarsfield to close out his playing days.

On the international stage, Chilavert earned over 70 caps for Paraguay, captaining the national team and representing his country at multiple FIFA World Cups and Copa América tournaments. Famous for scoring goals as a goalkeeper, he remains one of the highest-scoring keepers in football history. Individually, he was named IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper on multiple occasions and crowned South American Footballer of the Year, a rare honour for a man between the posts.
