A Goalkeeper Like No Other

José Luis Chilavert is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history. Born in Paraguay, he became famous not only for his shot-stopping ability, leadership and commanding presence, but for something no other keeper has ever truly matched – his goals.

Across his career, Chilavert scored over 60 competitive goals, including free-kicks, penalties and even a historic hat-trick from the penalty spot. He turned the goalkeeper position into a stage and made defenders and strikers alike look twice.

At club level, Chilavert starred for Sportivo Luqueño in Paraguay before moving to Argentina with San Lorenzo. His legendary status was cemented at Vélez Sarsfield, where he won multiple Argentine titles and the Copa Libertadores in 1994, followed by the Intercontinental Cup against AC Milan. He later played in Europe with Real Zaragoza and Strasbourg, and finished his career with Peñarol in Uruguay.

On the international stage, he earned over 70 caps for Paraguay and captained his country at multiple Copa América tournaments and two World Cups, in 1998 and 2002. He led Paraguay to the Copa América final in 1999 and remains a national hero, symbolising pride, defiance and belief.
