Josh Allen’s Unconventional Journey to Buffalo
Josh Allen’s path to the highest level was built on persistence. Born in Firebaugh, California, in 1996, he grew up on his family’s farm and played several sports at high school. Despite possessing obvious physical ability, Allen received little attention from leading college football programmes.
He began his college career at Reedley College, where a season of junior-college football finally helped him attract interest. The University of Wyoming offered him the opportunity to play at the top level of the college game, and Allen gradually developed into one of the country’s most intriguing quarterback prospects.
During the 2016 season, Allen helped Wyoming reach the Mountain West Championship Game. Buffalo scored touchdowns on all seven of its meaningful offensive possessions and did not punt, attempt a field goal or commit a turnover. Allen completed 21 of 25 passes for 308 yards and five touchdowns while also contributing 66 rushing yards.
The following Divisional Round against Kansas City became one of the era’s most dramatic playoff games. Allen passed for 329 yards and four touchdowns, with Gabriel Davis catching all four scores. Buffalo took the lead with 13 seconds remaining, only for Kansas City to force overtime and eventually win 42–36. Despite the result, Allen’s performance reinforced his reputation as a quarterback capable of matching the very best in the sport.
During the playoffs following the 2024 season, Buffalo defeated Denver and Baltimore to reach another AFC Championship Game. Allen scored twice on the ground in the 27–25 victory over the Ravens, helping the Bills progress through a tense contest against fellow MVP winner Lamar Jackson.
In January 2026, Allen delivered another determined display during a Wild Card game in Jacksonville. Playing through several physical knocks, he completed 28 of 35 passes for 273 yards and one touchdown while running for two more scores. His late one-yard touchdown completed the decisive drive in a 27–24 victory and delivered Buffalo’s first road playoff win since the 1992 season.
The Bills’ campaign ended with a 33–30 overtime defeat in Denver during the Divisional Round. Allen threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns in another close postseason contest. The result did not diminish a career already filled with dramatic playoff moments and outstanding individual performances.
Most Valuable Player and Record-Breaking Quarterback
Allen received the league’s Most Valuable Player award for the 2024 season. He produced 4,269 total yards and 41 total touchdowns while committing only eight turnovers, helping Buffalo finish 13–4 and win its fifth consecutive divisional title.
He became the first player in league history to record at least 40 total touchdowns in five consecutive seasons. During the same campaign, Allen moved beyond Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly for the most total touchdowns in Bills history.
Allen continued to produce remarkable numbers in 2025. He completed 69.4 per cent of his passes for 3,668 yards and 25 touchdowns, adding 579 rushing yards and 14 scores. He became the career leader for regular-season rushing touchdowns by a quarterback and reached 300 total touchdowns faster than any previous player.
Across his first eight regular seasons, Allen accumulated 30,102 passing yards and 220 touchdown passes. His rushing contribution added 4,721 yards and 79 touchdowns, while he also recorded a receiving score. Those figures underline why he is regarded as one of the most complete attacking players of his generation.
Allen has earned multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections in addition to his MVP award. His influence is not restricted to statistics. He has become the face of the Bills, embraced the city of Buffalo and created a powerful connection with a fanbase known for loyalty through every high and low.
American football does not provide a regular senior international tournament pathway comparable with sports organised around national teams. Allen therefore has no separate World Cup-style record, but his performances have gained an international following.
