A Unique Quarterback Emerges at Louisville
Lamar Jackson was born in Florida in 1997 and displayed exceptional athletic ability from an early age. He developed into a quarterback whose speed could transform a broken play into a major gain, but his passing talent and understanding of the position were equally important to his progress.
At the University of Louisville, Jackson quickly became one of the most entertaining players in college football. His performance in the 2015 Music City Bowl demonstrated the full range of his talent. He passed for 227 yards, rushed for 226 and scored four total touchdowns as Louisville defeated Texas A&M 27–21.
The following season turned Jackson into a national star. He passed for 3,543 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,571 yards and 21 scores. Defences struggled to contain his acceleration in open space, but concentrating too heavily on his movement allowed him to find receivers downfield.
Jackson won the 2016 Heisman Trophy, becoming Louisville’s first winner and the youngest recipient at the time. His honours also included the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award. He followed that historic campaign with another season featuring more than 3,600 passing yards and 1,600 rushing yards.
Louisville eventually retired Jackson’s number 8. The honour recognised a college career that changed expectations of what a quarterback could produce and introduced one of the sport’s most distinctive talents to a worldwide audience.
The Final Pick of the First Round
Baltimore selected Jackson with the 32nd pick in the 2018 draft after trading back into the first round. Despite his college achievements, he had remained available until the final selection of the opening round. Some observers questioned his ability to play quarterback professionally and suggested he might need to change position.
The Ravens committed to developing him as their quarterback. Jackson began his rookie season behind experienced starter Joe Flacco before taking control with Baltimore holding a 4–5 record. He led the team to six victories in its final seven regular-season games and secured the AFC North title.
His movement forced opposing defences to reconsider their normal responsibilities. Edge defenders could not attack without accounting for Jackson’s ability to escape, while linebackers had to decide whether to follow him or remain with running backs and receivers. Every option created a different opportunity for the Baltimore offence.
The 2019 Unanimous MVP
Jackson’s first full season as a starter produced immediate history. He led the league with 36 touchdown passes while throwing only six interceptions. He added 1,206 rushing yards, breaking Michael Vick’s single-season quarterback record, and scored another seven touchdowns on the ground.
Baltimore won 14 regular-season games, the highest total in franchise history, and entered the playoffs as the leading seed in the AFC. Jackson’s performances included five passing touchdowns in the opening game against Miami and another five-touchdown display against the Los Angeles Rams.
At the conclusion of the season, Jackson received every available first-place vote for the league’s MVP award. He became only the second unanimous winner at that point and the youngest quarterback to collect the honour.
Jackson surpassed 1,000 rushing yards again in 2020, becoming the first quarterback to achieve that milestone in multiple seasons. Baltimore also defeated Tennessee in the Wild Card round, giving Jackson his first postseason victory.
A Second MVP Campaign
Injuries disrupted the closing stages of the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but Jackson returned to lead another championship challenge in 2023. He passed for 3,678 yards and rushed for 821 as Baltimore finished 13–4, won the AFC North and secured the conference’s leading playoff seed.
Jackson produced some of his finest football against strong opposition. Late-season victories over San Francisco and Miami demonstrated Baltimore’s championship potential, with Jackson throwing five touchdowns against the Dolphins.
In the divisional playoff victory over Houston, he passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more. The result sent Baltimore into the AFC Championship Game, where its season ended against Kansas City.
Jackson was named MVP for the second time following the campaign. He joined a highly exclusive list of players to receive the award on multiple occasions and further established himself as the defining figure of Baltimore’s modern era.
Record-Breaking Passing and Rushing
The 2024 season provided a powerful response to anyone who continued to view Jackson primarily as a runner. He passed for a career-high 4,172 yards and 41 touchdowns while throwing only four interceptions. His 119.6 passer rating ranked among the highest single-season figures in the history of the game.
Jackson became the first player to record at least 4,000 passing yards and 800 rushing yards in the same campaign. He was also the first to throw 40 or more touchdowns with fewer than five interceptions.
His 915 rushing yards took him beyond Michael Vick as the career rushing leader among quarterbacks. Baltimore won another AFC North title, while Jackson received First-Team All-Pro recognition after producing the most complete statistical season of his career.
Injuries restricted him to 13 games in 2025, but Jackson still recorded 2,549 passing yards, 21 touchdown passes and a 103.8 passer rating. His career totals through eight seasons reached 22,608 passing yards, 187 passing touchdowns, 6,522 rushing yards and 35 rushing scores.
Jackson remains active and central to Baltimore’s ambitions. His career already includes two MVP awards, several division titles, multiple Pro Bowl selections and records that have changed the statistical expectations placed upon mobile quarterbacks.
Playing in Front of UK Fans
American football does not feature a regular senior international tournament pathway comparable with sports structured around national teams. Jackson therefore has no separate international championship record, but he has represented Baltimore in the UK.
Jackson started against Tennessee at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in October 2023. He passed for 223 yards, added 62 rushing yards and threw a touchdown as the Ravens won 24–16. His appearance allowed British supporters to experience the movement, improvisation and field awareness that make him such a compelling player.
