From Florida Talent to Louisville Heisman Winner
Lamar Jackson was born in Pompano Beach, Florida, in 1997 and developed into an exceptional dual-threat quarterback. His combination of acceleration, balance, arm strength and field vision made him a unique prospect, although some observers questioned whether his unconventional style would translate to the highest professional level.
Jackson attended the University of Louisville and immediately demonstrated that he could influence games both through the air and on the ground. In the 2015 Music City Bowl against Texas A&M, he passed for 227 yards, rushed for 226 and scored four total touchdowns as Louisville won 27–21. Jackson received the game’s Most Valuable Player award after becoming one of the few quarterbacks to produce more than 200 passing and rushing yards in the same bowl game.
His extraordinary breakthrough arrived in 2016. Jackson passed for 3,543 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,571 yards and another 21 scores. His performances included eight total touchdowns against Charlotte and five first-half touchdowns during an emphatic victory over Florida State.
Jackson won the Heisman Trophy, becoming Louisville’s first recipient and the youngest winner at the time. He also collected the Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award, confirming his position as the most outstanding player in college football.
He remained highly productive during 2017, passing for 3,660 yards and rushing for 1,601. Across his final two college seasons, Jackson produced more than 10,000 combined passing and rushing yards. Louisville later retired his number 8, permanently connecting it with one of the greatest players in the university’s history.
Beginning a New Era in Baltimore
Baltimore selected Jackson with the 32nd and final pick of the first round in the 2018 draft. Several teams had passed on him, while some analysts had even suggested that his athletic ability might be better used at another position. The Ravens believed he could become their quarterback and built an offence capable of maximising his unusual range of skills.
Jackson began his rookie campaign behind Joe Flacco but moved into the starting position with Baltimore holding a 4–5 record. He helped the Ravens win six of their final seven regular-season games and secure the AFC North title. His presence immediately changed the structure and pace of the offence.
Defenders had to account for Jackson on every play. He could hand the ball to a running back, keep it himself, escape around the edge or stop behind the line to find a receiver downfield. This uncertainty created space throughout the offence and made Baltimore one of the most difficult teams to prepare for.
The Unanimous MVP Season
Jackson’s first complete season as a starter became one of the finest quarterback campaigns in recent history. In 2019, he passed for 3,127 yards and led the league with 36 touchdown passes while throwing only six interceptions. He also rushed for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns.
His rushing total established a new single-season record for a quarterback, surpassing the mark previously held by Michael Vick. Jackson repeatedly turned potential sacks into major gains, freezing defenders with changes of direction and accelerating into open space.
Baltimore finished the regular season with a franchise-best 14–2 record and earned the top seed in the AFC. Jackson was selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player by every voter, becoming only the second unanimous winner in the history of the award at that time. He was also the youngest quarterback to receive the honour.
Jackson followed that achievement by surpassing 1,000 rushing yards again in 2020, becoming the first quarterback to record multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons. He also secured his first postseason victory when Baltimore defeated Tennessee in the Wild Card round.
A Second MVP and an AFC Championship Appearance
After injury-affected campaigns in 2021 and 2022, Jackson agreed a long-term contract with Baltimore and returned to his best during the 2023 season. Working in a redesigned offence, he passed for 3,678 yards and rushed for 821 while leading the Ravens to a 13–4 record.
Baltimore secured another AFC North title and the conference’s leading playoff seed. Jackson produced outstanding performances against leading opponents, including a five-touchdown display in a decisive victory over Miami. He then helped defeat Houston in the divisional round, passing for two touchdowns and rushing for two more.
The victory took Baltimore to the AFC Championship Game for the first time in Jackson’s career. Although the Ravens were defeated by Kansas City, Jackson’s regular-season excellence earned him a second league MVP award. He became one of only a small group of players to win the honour more than once.
A Historic Passing Season
Jackson produced the finest passing numbers of his career in 2024. He completed 316 passes for 4,172 yards, 41 touchdowns and only four interceptions. His passer rating of 119.6 was among the highest single-season marks ever recorded.
He became the first player in league history to combine at least 4,000 passing yards with 800 rushing yards in one season. He was also the first quarterback to throw at least 40 touchdown passes while recording fewer than five interceptions.
Jackson added 915 rushing yards and four scores, helping Baltimore win another AFC North title. During the campaign, he passed Michael Vick to become the leading rushing quarterback in professional football history.
Injuries limited Jackson to 13 appearances in 2025, but he still passed for 2,549 yards and 21 touchdowns while recording a 103.8 passer rating. Through his first eight seasons, his career totals stood at 22,608 passing yards, 187 passing touchdowns, 6,522 rushing yards and 35 rushing scores.
Jackson remains an active player, giving him the opportunity to extend a career already featuring two MVP awards, multiple Pro Bowl selections, repeated division championships and the all-time quarterback rushing record.
International Recognition
American football does not have a regular senior international tournament system comparable with sports organised around national teams, so Jackson has no separate World Cup-style career. He has, however, represented Baltimore in a regular-season game played in the UK.
In October 2023, Jackson led the Ravens against Tennessee at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. He passed for 223 yards, rushed for 62 and threw a touchdown as Baltimore earned a 24–16 victory. The performance gave British fans an opportunity to see his distinctive playing style at close range.
