Michael Essien was one of the most powerful, complete and respected midfielders of his generation. Known as “The Bison”, he built his reputation on strength, energy, tackling, passing, long-range shooting and the ability to dominate games from midfield. After developing in Ghana with Liberty Professionals, Essien moved to France with Bastia, where his performances quickly marked him out as a special talent. He then joined Lyon, winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and becoming one of the most exciting midfielders in European football.

His biggest club years came at Chelsea, where he became a favourite among fans and a key figure in one of the strongest eras in the club’s history. Essien won Premier League titles, FA Cups, the League Cup and was part of the Chelsea squad that won the European club football. He also had a memorable loan spell at Real Madrid under José Mourinho, before later playing for AC Milan, Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung and Sabail. Now retired from playing, he remains involved in football as a coach.

For Ghana, Essien became a national hero. He earned 59 caps and scored 9 goals for the Black Stars, representing his country with pride and passion. He played at the 2006 World Cup, where Ghana reached the knockout stages in their first ever World Cup appearance, and was also part of Ghana’s 2014 World Cup squad. His international career also included Africa Cup of Nations appearances and major moments in Ghana’s rise as one of Africa’s strongest football nations.
