Paul Gascoigne was named the PFA Young Player of the Year in 1988, was the most sought-after player in Europe after Italia 90, won the Scottish league title with Rangers and the FA Cup with Tottenham, and played with a level of creative genius that England supporters recognise as something the national team has not produced before or since. Paul Gascoigne joined Newcastle United and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1988 for £2 million. He won the FA Cup in 1991 — scoring a remarkable long-range free-kick against Arsenal in the semi-final. He moved to Lazio in 1992 and then Rangers in 1995, winning the Scottish league title. For England, he earned 57 caps and scored 10 international goals — his performances at Italia 90, particularly his tears when booked in the semi-final against West Germany, became the most iconic England images of the era.
