Paul McGrath won the PFA Players' Player of the Year award in 1993 while at Aston Villa — voted the best player in England by the professionals who played against him, at a time when his knees were so damaged that he could not train regularly and relied on match-day performance alone. The circumstances of his award are unique in the history of English football: a player who needed ice on his knees after every session competing at the top level of the game purely on ability, experience and an instinct for defending that had no equal in the country at the time.
McGrath's Villa years were the finest of a career that also included success at Manchester United and international recognition with Republic of Ireland. His reading of the game compensated for what his body could no longer reliably provide in terms of pace and recovery, and his partnership with other defenders at Villa Park created a backline that made the club competitive at the highest level for several consecutive seasons. Ron Atkinson built a team around McGrath's qualities, and the result was finishing second in the Premier League and producing some of the most assured defensive performances the club has seen in the modern era.
