Stuart Pearce spent twelve seasons at Nottingham Forest, represented England 78 times, missed a penalty in the Italia 90 World Cup semi-final against West Germany, and then scored from the spot at Euro 96 in the same position on the same ground — producing one of the most emotionally charged moments in the history of international football. Stuart Pearce joined Nottingham Forest from Coventry City in 1985 for £300,000 and spent twelve seasons at the City Ground, making 522 appearances and winning the League Cup twice. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year six times. For England, he earned 78 caps between 1987 and 1999, appearing at two World Cups and two European Championships. His missed penalty in the 1990 World Cup semi-final against West Germany was one of the most painful moments in England’s tournament history. At Euro 96, when England’s quarter-final against Spain went to a penalty shootout at Wembley, Pearce stepped up and scored — his clenched-fist, screaming celebration in front of the Wembley crowd one of the defining images of the tournament.
