Virgil van Dijk arrived at Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million — a world record for a defender — and transformed the club's defensive reliability so immediately and so completely that Jürgen Klopp's side went from conceding more than fifty league goals the previous season to conceding twenty-two in the title-winning campaign of 2019-20. The Dutch centre-back's combination of aerial dominance, composure on the ball and the psychological effect of his presence on those around him made him the most important defensive signing in the club's modern history.

Van Dijk's contribution to Liverpool's Champions League victory in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020 was the central defensive anchor that the club's most successful modern era required. His Ballon d'Or second place in 2019 — behind Messi and ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo — reflected the assessment of the wider football world that he had been the most important player in club football in the period immediately preceding the vote. Liverpool supporters consider him among the two or three most important players in the Klopp era.
