From Zanzibar to London
Farrokh Bulsara was born in Stone Town, Zanzibar, and spent much of his childhood at boarding school in India, where he played piano in a school band. His family moved to England in the 1960s and he studied graphic art and design in London.
In 1970 he joined guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, renamed himself Freddie Mercury and named the band Queen. Bassist John Deacon completed the line-up in 1971.

Bohemian Rhapsody
Released in 1975 from A Night at the Opera, "Bohemian Rhapsody" broke every rule of a pop single: nearly six minutes long, with ballad, opera and hard-rock sections. It spent nine weeks at No. 1 in the UK.
Its promotional video is often credited with helping to shape the music video era, and the song returned to No. 1 after Freddie's death.

Twenty Minutes at Live Aid
On 13 July 1985, Queen took to the stage at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid. In around twenty minutes Freddie had 72,000 people clapping in unison, and the set is regularly voted one of the greatest live performances in rock history.
He also explored solo work, releasing Mr. Bad Guy in 1985 and the operatic Barcelona with soprano Montserrat Caballé in 1988.
