Early Years: Karate in Quebec

Bullied at school, St-Pierre started Kyokushin karate at the age of seven in rural Quebec. He later studied kinesiology, working as a nightclub bouncer and a refuse collector to pay his way.

He made his UFC debut at UFC 46 in January 2004, beating Karo Parisyan, and was given a title shot against Matt Hughes later that year, losing by armbar in the first round.

Breakthrough: Champion, Upset and Redemption

After beating BJ Penn in 2006, GSP got his rematch with Hughes at UFC 65 and stopped him with a head kick and punches to become welterweight champion. Five months later came the biggest upset of his career, a first-round TKO loss to Matt Serra.

He responded brilliantly, submitting Hughes for the interim belt and then stopping Serra in Montreal at UFC 83 to reclaim the undisputed title.

Peak: The Welterweight King

From 2008 to 2013 St-Pierre was dominant, making nine successful title defences with a blend of striking, wrestling and preparation that few could match. He stopped Penn in their 2009 rematch, outpointed Nick Diaz and edged Johny Hendricks before vacating the title in December 2013.

The UFC credits him with the most total strikes landed (2,591) and the most takedowns (90) in its history.

Later Career: The Middleweight Comeback

After four years away, GSP moved up to middleweight and choked out Michael Bisping at UFC 217 in November 2017 to become one of only a handful of fighters to win UFC titles in two weight classes. He vacated the belt a month later and announced his retirement in 2019, undefeated in his final 13 fights.
