Early Years on the Sunset Strip

The band took shape in Los Angeles in 1985, when singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin joined forces with guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler. The classic line-up was settled that June, and the five quickly built a reputation on the Sunset Strip club circuit for raw, dangerous live shows.

Geffen Records signed them and in 1987 released Appetite for Destruction. It was a slow burn at first, but once MTV picked up "Welcome to the Jungle" the album took off.

Appetite and the Breakthrough

"Sweet Child o' Mine", built on Slash's unforgettable opening riff, became the band's only US number one single, and "Paradise City" turned into a stadium anthem. Appetite for Destruction has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, around 18 million of them in the US, making it the best-selling debut album in American history.

G N' R Lies followed in 1988, mixing early live recordings with acoustic tracks such as "Patience".

Use Your Illusion and the Long Road

In 1991 the band released Use Your Illusion I and II on the same day, two ambitious records featuring epics such as "November Rain" and "Estranged". The line-up changed over the years, and after the covers album The Spaghetti Incident? (1993), Axl Rose led the band into a long period of work that finally produced Chinese Democracy in 2008.
