Snoop Dogg Career Story: Albums, Death Row and Legacy

Snoop Dogg has had a busy 2026. In April he released his 22nd studio album, 10 Til' Midnight, on Death Row and Gamma, with production from Pharrell Williams, Swizz Beatz and Erick Sermon. Earlier in the year he was back with NBC as a roving correspondent at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, and he turns 55 on 20 October.

Early Years in Long Beach

Calvin Broadus grew up in Long Beach, where his mother gave him the nickname Snoopy because she thought he looked like the Peanuts character. He sang in church as a child and graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1989. With his cousin Nate Dogg and friend Warren G he formed the group 213, and it was Warren G who passed his tapes to Dr. Dre.

The Breakthrough: Deep Cover and Doggystyle

Dre put him on the 1992 film theme Deep Cover, then all over his landmark album The Chronic. That set the stage for Doggystyle, released on Death Row in November 1993. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell more than 11 million copies worldwide. Tha Doggfather followed in 1996 and also entered the chart at number one.

He has made reggae and gospel records and acted in films such as Training Day. In 2022 he joined Dr. Dre and friends for the Super Bowl LVI halftime show, and that February he acquired Death Row Records, the label that launched him.
