A Child Prodigy at Motown

Born in Saginaw and raised in Detroit, he signed to Motown's Tamla label at just 11, and the label renamed him Little Stevie Wonder. In 1963 the live single "Fingertips" made him, at 13, the youngest artist to top the US Billboard Hot 100.

Through the 1960s he grew from novelty to hitmaker, writing and co-writing more and more of his own material.

Creative Control and the Classic Period

Turning 21 in 1971, he negotiated a new deal giving him artistic control. What followed was one of pop's great runs: Music of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions and Fulfillingness' First Finale, built on his pioneering use of synthesisers.

Hits such as "Superstition" and "Higher Ground" came from these records, and he won Album of the Year in back-to-back years.

Songs in the Key of Life

Released in 1976, the double album Songs in the Key of Life topped the Billboard 200 and won him a third Album of the Year, with songs such as "Sir Duke" and "Isn't She Lovely". Its 50th anniversary is the reason for this year's tour.
