From a Dartford Platform to the Marquee
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, old primary-school friends, reconnected on platform two at Dartford station on 17 October 1961. Brian Jones named the band after the Muddy Waters track "Rollin' Stone", and on 12 July 1962 they played their first show at London's Marquee Club. In 1964 "It's All Over Now" became their first UK number one single.

Satisfaction and the Golden Run
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (1965) gave the Stones their first US number one. Then came a famous run: Aftermath, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St., begun in a villa in the South of France and finished in Los Angeles. Brian Jones left in June 1969 and died weeks later; Mick Taylor joined on guitar.

The Tongue, the Line-Ups and the Long Haul
In 1970 came Rolling Stones Records and John Pasche's tongue and lips logo, inspired by Jagger's suggestion of the Hindu goddess Kali. Ronnie Wood, formerly of Faces, joined for the 1975 tour and became official in 1976. Voodoo Lounge (1994) was the first album without Bill Wyman, with Darryl Jones on bass, and Steve Jordan became the regular drummer after Charlie Watts died in August 2021.
