Wayne Gretzky remains a familiar voice in hockey. The Great One has been a studio analyst for TNT's NHL coverage since 2021 and signed a multi-year extension in October 2025. In April 2025 he was also in the spotlight when Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th goal to pass Gretzky's long-standing career goals record.
Even with that record gone, his total of 2,857 points looks untouchable. Here is the story of the man who wore 99. Browse the ice hockey collection as you read.

Early Years: The Kid From Brantford
Gretzky grew up in Brantford, Ontario, and was famous as a teenager long before he turned pro. He began in the WHA with the Indianapolis Racers in 1978 before moving to the Edmonton Oilers that same season. When the Oilers joined the NHL in 1979, the number 99 was ready for the big stage.

The Breakthrough: Records in Edmonton
In 1981–82 Gretzky scored 50 goals in just 39 games and finished the season with 92. Four seasons later he set a single-season record of 215 points. The Oilers became a dynasty, winning the Stanley Cup in 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988, with Gretzky collecting Hart and Art Ross trophies almost every year.

The Peak: The Trade and Hollywood Hockey
On 9 August 1988, in a deal known simply as "The Trade", Gretzky moved from Edmonton to the Los Angeles Kings. It shocked Canada and transformed hockey's profile in the United States. He scored 918 points in eight seasons with the Kings and led them to the Stanley Cup Final in 1993.

Later Career: St. Louis and New York
Gretzky was traded to the St. Louis Blues in February 1996, then joined the New York Rangers that summer, playing his final game in 1999. The Hockey Hall of Fame waived its usual waiting period to induct him that year, and the NHL retired number 99 for every team. He later coached the Phoenix Coyotes from 2005 to 2009.
