Early Years: Karts and British Junior Formulas

Senna's father built him his first kart, powered by a tiny lawnmower engine. He began racing competitively at 13, won the South American Kart Championship in 1977 and twice finished runner-up at the Karting World Championship.

He moved to Britain and swept the junior ranks: Formula Ford 1600 titles in 1981, British and European FF2000 crowns in 1982 and the British F3 title in 1983.

Breakthrough: Monaco 1984

Driving an uncompetitive Toleman, Senna started 13th at a soaking Monaco in 1984 and carved through the field, passing Keke Rosberg and Niki Lauda and closing fast on Alain Prost before the race was stopped. He was classified second, and the paddock knew a star had arrived.

At Lotus he took his first win in the rain at Portugal in 1985 and started piling up pole positions, eventually 65 of them.

Peak: McLaren, Prost and Three Titles

Joining McLaren-Honda in 1988, Senna won eight races and the championship, clinching it at Suzuka after stalling on pole and charging back from 14th. His rivalry with team-mate Prost defined the era, with further titles in 1990 and 1991.

There was magic everywhere: a first home win in Brazil in 1991 despite gearbox failure, a record sixth Monaco win in 1993, and the European Grand Prix at a wet Donington that year, when he passed four cars on the opening lap and lapped everyone up to third place.
