Early Years in Missouri
Born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Pitt grew up in Springfield, Missouri. He went on to the University of Missouri to study journalism with a focus on advertising, but left just weeks before finishing his degree and headed to Los Angeles to try his luck as an actor. His first screen work came in 1987, including uncredited film parts and the NBC soap Another World.

The Breakthrough Years
A short but scene-stealing turn as the charming drifter J.D. in Thelma & Louise (1991) changed everything. A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall and Interview with the Vampire followed. In 1995 he starred in David Fincher's Seven and earned his first Oscar nomination, plus a Golden Globe win, for his wild-eyed performance in 12 Monkeys.
Fight Club (1999) made Tyler Durden a cult figure, and Ocean's Eleven (2001) launched a hit heist trilogy.

Plan B and the Defining Roles
In 2001 Pitt co-founded Plan B Entertainment. It produced 12 Years a Slave, which won the Oscar for Best Picture, and Moonlight, another Best Picture winner. On screen he earned further Oscar nominations for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Moneyball and became a fan favourite as Aldo Raine in Inglourious Basterds.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) finally brought him an acting Oscar, as laid-back stuntman Cliff Booth.
F1 and Where He Is Now
Pitt played veteran racer Sonny Hayes in Joseph Kosinski's F1, released in June 2025. It became Apple's biggest cinema release, passed World War Z as his top-grossing film and earned four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, winning Best Sound. With two new films in 2026, he shows no sign of slowing down.
