Jackie Stewart Career Story: The Flying Scot's Three Titles

Sir Jackie Stewart is 87 now, but the Flying Scot remains one of Formula 1's most influential voices. Three world titles would be legacy enough, yet his campaign to make racing safer arguably saved more lives than any trophy could measure.

Away from the track, he has spent recent years fighting dementia through the charity he founded, Race Against Dementia. Here is his story, and you can shop every design in our Jackie Stewart collection.

A Young Shot From Dunbartonshire

Before he was a racer, Stewart was a crack shot, winning a clay pigeon competition at 13 and narrowly missing out on the 1960 Olympic trap team. Struggling at school, he was not diagnosed with dyslexia until he was 41.

On track he caught the eye of Ken Tyrrell, winning the 1963 British Formula 3 series with seven straight victories, and he reached Formula 1 with BRM in 1965.

The Nürburgring in the Fog

Stewart won his first Grand Prix at Monza in 1965 and his second at Monaco in 1966. Reunited with Tyrrell at Matra in 1968, he produced one of the greatest drives in history at the German Grand Prix.

In rain and fog on the old Nürburgring, he won by around four minutes. A year later, in 1969, six wins brought him his first world championship.

Tyrrell Titles and a Safety Crusade

With Tyrrell's own car, Stewart won the 1971 title with six victories and added a third crown in 1973, taking his 27th and final win at the Nürburgring.

A heavy crash at Spa in 1966 turned him into a relentless campaigner for barriers, seat belts, full-face helmets and proper medical facilities. When team-mate François Cevert was killed in practice at Watkins Glen in 1973, Stewart withdrew from what would have been his 100th Grand Prix and retired.
