Early Years on a Borders Farm
James Clark was born on 4 March 1936 at Kilmany in Fife, the youngest of five children and the only boy in a farming family. In 1942 the Clarks moved south to Edington Mains, a farm near Duns in Berwickshire, and the Borders became home for the rest of his life.
Speed found him anyway. After local rallies and hill climbs, he made his first race start at Crimond in June 1956 in a DKW. By 1958 he was driving Jaguar D-Types and Porsches for the Border Reivers, the local team run by his friend Ian Scott-Watson.

The Lotus Breakthrough
The turning point came on Boxing Day 1958 at Brands Hatch, when Clark finished second to Colin Chapman himself in a Lotus Elite race. Chapman saw something special, and Clark joined Team Lotus in 1960, making his Formula 1 debut at the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort that June.
Chapman built light, clever cars and Clark had the touch to exploit them. His first Grand Prix win came at the 1962 Belgian Grand Prix, and he finished runner-up in the championship that year.

Two Titles and Indianapolis Glory
In 1963 Clark was simply untouchable. Driving the Lotus 25, he won a record seven of the ten championship rounds to claim his first world title. He was also second on his Indy 500 debut that year.
1965 was even more remarkable. Clark skipped Monaco to race at Indianapolis and won the 500 in the Lotus 38, the first mid-engined car ever to win the race. Six Grand Prix wins then brought a second world crown. In 1967 he gave the Lotus 49 and its Ford-Cosworth DFV engine a winning debut at Zandvoort.

A Lasting Legacy
Clark opened 1968 by winning the South African Grand Prix, his 25th victory. Sadly, on 7 April 1968 he lost his life in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim, aged just 32. He is buried at Chirnside in Berwickshire.
