Early Years: From Newark to Brockton

Marvin Hagler was born in Newark, New Jersey, and raised by his mother in the city's Central Ward. After the 1967 Newark riots destroyed the family's home, they moved to Brockton, Massachusetts. He left school at 14 and worked in a toy factory, and in 1969 he walked into a gym run by brothers Goody and Pat Petronelli. They guided him throughout his career.

As an amateur he lost just once in 56 bouts, winning the 1973 national AAU title at 165 lb before turning professional.

Breakthrough: The Long Road to Wembley

His first title shot in 1979 ended in a 15-round draw with Vito Antuofermo. On 27 September 1980 he faced Alan Minter at Wembley Arena in London and stopped him in the third round to become world middleweight champion. It was the start of a reign that would bring 12 successful defences, all but one ending inside the distance.

Peak: The War and the Big Nights

Hagler held the WBA, WBC and IBF belts together as undisputed champion, and in 1983 he outpointed the great Roberto Durán over 15 rounds. Then came 15 April 1985 at Caesars Palace and Thomas Hearns. Their opening round is regarded by The Ring as the greatest round in boxing history. Despite a nasty cut on his forehead, Hagler finished the job in the third.

A year later he wore down the hard-hitting John Mugabi in 11 rounds, before agreeing to face Sugar Ray Leonard on 6 April 1987. Leonard took a split decision over 12 rounds, a verdict still debated today.
