Early Years: From Stevenage to McLaren
Hamilton started karting as a young boy in Hertfordshire and was signed to McLaren's young driver programme as a teenager. He worked his way up through the junior categories, winning the GP2 title in 2006, and made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2007. As a rookie he finished just one point behind the champion.

The Breakthrough: Champion in 2008
A year later he made no mistake. Hamilton won the 2008 world title with McLaren at the final race of the season in Brazil, becoming the youngest champion in F1 history at the time. He stayed with McLaren until 2012, winning 21 races in total, before a move that would reshape the sport.

The Peak: Six Titles With Mercedes
Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013, and from 2014 the team became the dominant force in F1. He won world titles in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020, equalling Michael Schumacher's record of seven championships, and passed Schumacher's records for wins and poles along the way. He was knighted in the 2021 New Year Honours. In all he won 84 races for Mercedes before leaving at the end of 2024.
