Cale Makar and a new standard for NHL defence
Cale Makar developed with the Brooks Bandits and the University of Massachusetts before joining the Colorado Avalanche during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He scored in his NHL debut and quickly showed why Colorado had selected him fourth in the 2017 draft. His acceleration, edge work and confidence carrying the puck changed the angle of attacks, while his recovery speed allowed him to defend aggressively.
Makar won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's leading rookie in 2020. In 2022 he collected the Norris Trophy as the league's outstanding defenceman, helped Colorado win the Stanley Cup and received the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs. A second Norris followed for the 2024 to 2025 season. In 2026 he signed an eight-year extension designed to keep him with the Avalanche through 2034 to 2035, confirming his place at the centre of the franchise.
