Lopez became synonymous with Pipeline in the early 1970s, winning the Masters in 1972 and 1973 and earning the name ‘Mr Pipeline’. His relaxed stance inside violent barrels changed how surfers imagined poise and control, while Lightning Bolt boards helped define the era's equipment and visual identity. Later exploration, shaping and yoga extended his influence beyond competition into a complete philosophy of surfing.
