Represent Iman with the full story
Iman Abdulmajid changed the possibilities for Black models in international fashion. Born in Mogadishu and educated in Somalia, Egypt and Kenya, she was studying political science in Nairobi when photographer Peter Beard drew attention to her. After moving to the United States in the 1970s, she worked with photographers and designers including Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Yves Saint Laurent and Halston. Saint Laurent described her as a dream woman for his African Queen collection, but Iman's importance lies not simply in being admired by famous designers. She challenged an industry that routinely treated Black beauty as exotic or interchangeable.
The moments behind the lettering
Her career expanded into acting, philanthropy and business. Iman Cosmetics, launched in the 1990s, addressed the shortage of prestige make-up shades for women of colour and turned lived experience into a commercially important beauty brand. She has also supported humanitarian work and campaigned for greater representation. Her marriage to David Bowie became part of popular culture, yet she maintained a professional identity independent of his fame. Elegance, directness and commercial judgement made her not only a model in other people's images but an owner shaping what the market offered.
IMAN is a single-name design with exceptional recognition. It represents fashion history, Somali heritage, entrepreneurship and a standard of elegance that never depended on a borrowed logo.
Why the design works
The collegiate-style lettering keeps Iman at the centre of the T-shirt. It is bold enough to be recognised by somebody who knows the reference, yet restrained enough to work as everyday clothing. The approach does not try to imitate a shirt, poster, programme graphic, album sleeve, package or character image. It lets the name carry the history and gives different fans room to bring their own memory to it.
How to wear the Iman T-shirt
Wear it to a fashion event, exhibition, city break or as part of a considered everyday outfit. The restrained lettering works with straight denim, trainers, tailoring or an overshirt and lets the name carry the reference. White gives the lettering a crisp finish, Black and Navy are versatile darker choices, Grey has a softer athletic character and Red brings more impact. The design can be worn on its own in warmer weather or layered beneath an overshirt, hoodie or casual jacket.
Soft ringspun cotton and a regular men's fit
This men's T-shirt is made from soft ringspun cotton with a crew neck, short sleeves and a regular fit. Sizes run from S, M and L through XL, 2XL and 3XL, with White, Black, Red, Navy and Grey colour options. Check the size guide before ordering, particularly when buying as a gift or when a looser fit is preferred.
Players Couture prints each garment to order in the United Kingdom after the customer chooses the colour and size. No finished, pre-printed stock is produced before an order is placed. This reduces the need to hold large quantities of completed stock and leaves room in the collection for specialist references as well as widely known favourites. Free UK delivery is included.
Wash the T-shirt inside out with similar colours on a cool cycle. Avoid bleach, do not iron directly over the lettering and air dry where practical. These simple steps help protect the cotton shape and printed surface through repeat wear.
