The list shows how his career moved from leading man to director - from the 1990s onwards many of his biggest successes came from behind the camera.
Early Years and Rawhide
Clint grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, living in Oakland and later Piedmont, and finished school at Oakland Technical High School in 1949. He was drafted into the US Army during the Korean War, and during his service he survived a plane crash off the California coast by swimming to shore. After his discharge, Universal signed him to a contract in 1954, and a run of small parts followed before television gave him his big chance. As cattle drover Rowdy Yates in Rawhide, he became a familiar face in homes across America.

The Man with No Name and Dirty Harry
During breaks from Rawhide, Clint travelled to Europe to work with Sergio Leone. A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly turned the quiet, squinting stranger into a global icon and reshaped the Western. Back home he founded Malpaso Productions, named after a creek on his Monterey County land, and its first production was Hang 'Em High (1968). Then came Inspector Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry (1971), a role he returned to four times up to The Dead Pool (1988).

Oscar Glory Behind the Camera
Clint had been directing since the early 1970s, but Unforgiven (1992) was the moment everything came together. His dark, thoughtful Western won Best Picture and Best Director, and he repeated the double with the boxing drama Million Dollar Baby in 2004. Other highlights include Mystic River, Letters from Iwo Jima, Invictus and Sully.
Later Career and Legacy
Well into his eighties and nineties, Clint kept working at a pace that would tire younger filmmakers. He starred in and directed Gran Torino, The Mule (2018) and Cry Macho (2021), and American Sniper became one of his biggest hits. Known for efficient sets and few takes, he brought Juror #2, starring Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette, to the screen in 2024 at the age of 94.
