Early Years in Detroit

Marshall Mathers was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, and moved back and forth between Missouri and Michigan as a child before settling in Detroit at around 12. He started rapping as a teenager and made his name on the city's battle-rap circuit, releasing his debut album Infinite on the small Web label in 1996.

It sold modestly, but it led to the creation of Slim Shady, the provocative alter ego who would soon make him famous.

Slim Shady and the Big Breakthrough

The Slim Shady EP (1997) caught the ear of Dr. Dre, who signed Eminem to Aftermath. The Slim Shady LP (1999) made him a star, and The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) went even further, eventually earning diamond certification from the RIAA in 2011. The Eminem Show (2002) followed, with around 27 million copies sold worldwide.

In 2001 he also released Devil's Night with his Detroit crew D12.

8 Mile and the Oscar

In 2002 Eminem starred in 8 Mile, a drama loosely inspired by his early battle-rap days. Its theme, "Lose Yourself", won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 2003 ceremony, the first hip-hop song ever to take the prize, and added two more Grammys in 2004.

Recovery (2010) was the best-selling album in the world that year, and in 2022 he joined Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige for the Super Bowl LVI halftime show.

Still at the Top

The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), released in July 2024, built a whole album around retiring his famous alter ego. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 281,000 units, and in May 2025 it won Favorite Hip-Hop Album at the American Music Awards.

Later in 2025 he performed with Jack White at the Detroit Lions' Thanksgiving halftime show, and in 2026 he has been busy with guest spots and production work.
