Early Years: The Louisville Lip
Cassius Clay grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and took up boxing as a boy. By 1960 he was good enough to win light-heavyweight gold at the Rome Olympics, and he turned professional soon after. Quick-handed, quick-footed and even quicker with a quip, he quickly became the most talked-about young fighter in the world.

The Breakthrough: Shaking Up the World
On 25 February 1964 he faced the feared Sonny Liston in Miami Beach as a big underdog. Liston failed to come out for the seventh round and the 22-year-old was heavyweight champion of the world. Soon afterwards he changed his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1967 he refused induction into the US Army and was stripped of his title, losing more than three years of his prime. In 1971 the US Supreme Court overturned his conviction.

The Peak: Kinshasa and Manila
Ali lost the "Fight of the Century" to Joe Frazier in March 1971, but his greatest nights were still to come. On 30 October 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaire, he soaked up George Foreman's power before knocking him out to regain the title in the "Rumble in the Jungle". A year later he beat Frazier in the brutal "Thrilla in Manila".

Later Career: Three-Time Champion
Ali lost his title to Leon Spinks in February 1978, then won the rematch that September to become the first man to win the heavyweight title three times. He fought on until December 1981, when he lost to Trevor Berbick in his final bout. In 1996 he lit the Olympic cauldron in Atlanta, one of the most moving moments in Olympic history.
