Early Years in Los Angeles
The Red Hot Chili Peppers formed in Los Angeles in 1982, when school friends Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons turned a one-off gig into a band. Their early records on EMI America mixed punk energy with funk grooves, and Flea's slap bass quickly became the band's calling card.
Drummer Chad Smith and guitarist John Frusciante joined in 1988, and Mother's Milk (1989) gave them their first real taste of success.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication
Signing to Warner Bros., the band teamed up with producer Rick Rubin for Blood Sugar Sex Magik in 1991, the album that made them global stars. Dave Navarro played guitar on 1995's One Hot Minute, before Frusciante returned for Californication in 1999, one of the defining rock records of its era.

Stadium Arcadium and Beyond
By the Way (2002) and the double album Stadium Arcadium (2006) cemented their status as a stadium act. Josh Klinghoffer took over guitar from 2009 to 2019, and the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. In 2014 they joined Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show.
Frusciante's return in December 2019 led to two albums in 2022, Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, and a global stadium tour that opened in Seville in June 2022 and ran into 2024.

Away From the Spotlight
Flea's solo album Honora, released on Nonesuch in March 2026, featured Thom Yorke on the single "Traffic Lights" and was followed by a small-venue tour. The band also played the FireAid benefit concert for Los Angeles wildfire relief in January 2025.
